G-Cloud

On 21 May, a strategic document "The proposal of centralization and development of data centers in state administration" was approved by the government of the Slovak Republic. Its main objective is to centralize vast amount of state data centers into two main data centers –  the data center of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Interior.

G-cloud features

Vlastnosti cloudu obrazok

Effective infrastructure

One comprehensive system instead of several not fully used.

Cheaper operation

Operation of one standardized platform/environment instead of dozens of server rooms with a lot of platforms.

Higher security

Cloud has defined standards and strict security policies. All data are within the infrastructure of the state administration in the territory of the Slovak Republic.

High availability

The infrastructure is designed with N+1 system where every component in the cloud is redundant.

Full automation

Orchestration and automation tools are a part of the cloud. They enable automated creation, changes and cancellation of required services.

Easy scalability

Cloud was designed to be scalable in all directions. In case of insufficient server capacity, servers can be added into the system, in case of insufficient disc capacity, disks are added into repositories.

Register

Only natural and legal person of a state administration can register to the Government Cloud.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ and answers concerning G-cloud services.

What is a G-cloud?

G-cloud (Government Cloud) is a platform of government-wide adoption of cloud computing which creates a more efficient and accessible means for dynamic releasing and sharing of technical sources, i.e. servers, storages, databases, applications etc.

Is it possible to operate all IT systems from the cloud?

No, it is not. However, majority of new IT systems should be designed as cloud ready.

Is it possible to migrate all IT systems of state administration into the cloud?

No it is not. It is recommended not to migrate the systems with sufficient high quality and secure ICT infrastructure which do not need new cloud services. In case of an important update, a need for new cloud services or any reason for the infrastructure upgrade, it is recommended to migrate the systems into the cloud.

Why does the state build its own cloud and it does not use commercially available solutions (e.g. Amazon cloud, Microsoft Azure etc.)?

Legislation, nature and a character of information systems and data supposed to be used for operations in the state cloud demand specific requirements for the architecture, safety, physical placement, DR and guaranteed availability.

How to register into the cloud?

Only natural or legal person of state administration can register into the cloud. The registration depends on the type of the organization:
  • Central Authority – the Ministry of Finance arranged distribution of contracts on provision of G-cloud services to individual central authorities of the ministries. To register into the G-cloud, it is necessary to sign the contracts and send them back to the Ministry of Finance. Then you will be delivered the access data for the CSP system through which the requirements for the services of G-cloud can be submitted.
  • Subordinate organization – contact the particular central authority
  • In case of the organizations of the local self-governments contact DEUS (Datacenter of the Electronization of the Local Self-Government)

What services will be provided by the cloud?

The services can be divided into three categories:
  • ICT infrastructure IaaS services as: network and security infrastructure, internet connections and connections to the networks of state administration, server platforms, repositories, backup infrastructure etc.
  • Platform services PaaS such as: web servers, application servers, integration components and platforms, databases etc.
  • Various software services SaaS such as: email and collaboration tools, DMS, ERP, CRM etc.
The detailed list of the services currently offered can be found in the service catalogue. The target status of the proposed services can be changed by the cloud owner based on the latest requirements of the customers.

What services are in the latest catalogue?

The IaaS services which are published in the catalogue of services. The state administration clients can currently ask the Ministry of Finance and later also the Ministry of Interior to establish the infrastructure environment for their information systems. Usually, there are four environments created: for developing, testing, integrating and production. They serve for development, testing, implementing and operation of new IT systems and updates in the integrated environment of state administration.

Is the catalogue of IaaS services final?

The final list of cloud services is changed according to the latest requirements of the cloud clients and based on the decision of the cloud owner. The list of IaaS services is not final yet. It is necessary to extend the cloud also into the datacenter administered by the Ministry of Interior which is also the owner of the G-cloud and add DR IaaS services.

What if the cloud capacity has been filled?

Physical and logical topology of cloud is separated. The cloud was designed to be scalable in all directions. In case of insufficient capacity of the servers, they are added to the system. In case of insufficient capacity of disks, they are added to the repositories or the number of repositories is extended. In case of firewall saturation, additional firewalls are added. All happens without the need of logic topology changes and with minimal, or zero impact on the operation of existing systems in the cloud.

How are the cloud services charged?

Cloud services are free. Every request to establish cloud services is subject to the approval of a Provider of the cloud services. The provider will assess requests depending on the disposable capacity of the cloud. The cloud services are automatically created and open for the client upon their approval by the provider.

Is SLA guaranteed for cloud services?

SLA is created and guaranteed for all cloud services.

How do I access the cloud services?

It is possible to access the cloud services independently of the location of the cloud services operation, or the location of the access to them. Also the personal contact with the cloud services provider is not needed. Upon the submitting, approving and implementing of cloud services, the client gets a VPN access to them, which is automatically created.

How do I report the incidents on cloud services?

The cloud client can access the system service desk through which he can report the incidents, problems and also ask for additional information about cloud services.

Can also commercial suppliers use the testing environment for state administration applications development?

No, they cannot. All environments can be used only by the state administration to support development of the services in the integrated environment of the state administration. The suppliers can, however, get an access to the environments in case they need to tune, test, implement or support their systems in the environment of the state administration.
